Dubai has seen unprecedented development over the last 45 years and the eyes of the world will certainly be on the region when it hosts Expo 2020 Dubai between October 2020 and April 2021 – the first world Expo to be held in the Middle East.
It has been estimated that 33 million people will be drawn to the region over this period – as such, huge infrastructure projects are being developed including a new international airport, the extension of the metro service, new road infrastructure, shopping centres, multiple hotel projects and a 438 hectare Expo site which will contribute to providing over 250,000 jobs.
Additionally, Dubai’s vision is that Expo 2020 will be the ‘greenest’ World Expo with 50% of its energy requirements being produced onsite. His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Chairman of Dubai Expo 2020 previously commented: “Energy is one of the main components for sustainable development and the foundation for a positive environment that encourages collaboration, partnership, creativity, and innovation”.
Sustainability is the focus of many aspects of Expo 2020 Dubai from the philosophy of the design to the implementation of renewable energy technologies. These include large-scale buildings that integrate photo voltaic and solar technology as well as the Dubai Government’s own sustainability criteria for the carbon footprint, water balance and recycling of the Expo.
World Expos have historically acted as economic catalysts. In addition to boosting tourism, creating new job opportunities and increasing hospitality revenues, they also tend to attract investments from outside the country.
