How Different is Qatar? Part Two

Here are few other tips for doing business in Qatar:

Always keep business cards with you and when you accept a business card make sure you take your time to look at it, and then either keep it in your hand or on the table in front of you.

Eye contact is important make sure you look at the person you are speaking too.

When speaking to a Qatari businessman do not ask about wives or female children. Instead ask how is your family?

Qataris are very hospitable and will offer you a drink; you should always accept at least one.

Punctuality is not considered important to some Qataris so you should expect to be kept waiting a few times. Also they may tell you five minutes, but five minutes may become ten minutes, half an hour an hour etc. It is rude to appear rushed so try to avoid glancing at your watch.

You may do business with a Qatari woman or man and if you are a man you should not offer to shake hands with the Qatari woman unless she offers to shake hands with you first. This also applies to a woman when meeting a Qatari man. This will be a bit strange at first but you will get used to it, plus most Qatari men and women will make the first move so be guided by them. Most will offer to shake your hand.

Lastly show respect to their local customs and make sure that you don’t wear any revealing clothing when out in public.

There is no getting around the fact that moving to Qatar is going to  require a cultural adjustment. The best thing you can do is to just accept that things are going to be different and enjoy the experience of Qatar. Most of the people here are very friendly and respectful and it is one of the safest countries in the world, plus who doesn’t want to be part of the next big chapter for Qatar?
